18 inches, you say? No, try 12. And you’d be shocked at what you can do with 3 inches in the back. I’ve seen videos of the USGP MX races at Carlsbad in the early ’70s when 3″ was the norm, and then again in the early ’80s when 12 was the norm. The speed at which those guys assaulted the track didn’t really seem to change. I’m sure it did, if you look at lap times, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. So long as you’re willing to get your off the seat, any short-travel bike can haul ass.

I tried my Sportie offroad once, dropped it many times and one last time in a sand pit and was unable to get it back up by myself. I figured it was much too heavy for scrambling.
